BUNGALOW DEEP RETROFIT

Project Details

Completed: 2023

Location: Sussex

Type: Retrofit  / Private house â€‹

Construction: Masonry cavity wall

Contractor: Tom Hayes

Structural engineer: Archibald Shaw

Description

This retrofit involved externally insulating and internally reorganizing this small brick and rendered bungalow to create a warm, spacious and light home.

The layout of the bungalow has been transformed to create a 3 bed house with a study mezzanine. A large south facing kitchen/dining/living room makes full use of the increased width of the house creating a much more open feeling living area and will have view into the garden through a large bi-folding door and window seat. Opening up into the attic space, along with roof lights creates a much more open, light feeling space.

The house has been insulated by wrapping the external walls have with Rigid Woodfibre, filling the cavities, and natural insulation in the roof. This has significantly improved the bungalow's thermal performance and a new Air Source Heat Pump combined with underfloor heating replaced the old gas boiler reducing the Carbon footprint required to heat the dwelling. As part of the upgrade the airtightness of the building has been greatly improved through careful detailing and a new Mechanical Ventilation system with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system provides fresh air with minimal loss of heat in winter.
